Things I learned at the LES 2008 Spring Meeting

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Just back from a productive and fun week in Chicago.  RoyaltyZone attended the Licensing Executives Society - LES 2008 Spring Meeting and had a booth at the Tech Expo.  Met lots of interesting and helpful folks!  LES is a great organization, and I encourage anyone involved in the licensing business to become a member.

Here are the top things I learned at the meeting:

  1. You can fit an entire submarine in a building (and then use the area to serve cocktails and dessert).
  2. No one ends up in jail when prosecuting patents.
  3. 40% of the LES attendees were IP attorneys.
  4. Our international licensing friends face many of the same challenges we do when it comes to enforcing license agreements.
  5. Most companies are still using excel and/or manual processes to manage licensing and royalty revenue.
  6. There are many great tasting Kentucky Bourbons and Whiskey’s that I’d never heard of.  Until Now.
  7. Salad can be an entree?  Who knew?
  8. In most cases, the team that negotiates the license agreement is not the same as the team responsible for enforcing the license agreement.
  9. A single Patent can be both extremely valuable and worthless at the same time (learned that one during a midnight lobby bar debate).
  10. Chicago is my kind of town.
All in all a great event, with many interested prospects for RoyaltyZone.  Looking forward to the LES 2008 Annual Meeting in Orlando.  See you there!
